This music room in Wilmslow began as a tired, underused space that had never reached its full potential. The client loved the idea of retreating into a cosy, atmospheric room to listen to music and entertain, but the existing layout and finishes simply weren’t working. The shelving flanking the fireplace was uneven and visually heavy, the proportions were awkward, and the room lacked cohesion, personality, and any sense of identity. He asked for a transformation that felt welcoming yet dramatic, leaning into rich dark tones and subtle 1930s character.
The redesign began by rebalancing the architectural features. We levelled and refined the existing cabinetry, bringing symmetry and intention back to the room. This immediately shifted the visual weight of the space and created a stronger foundation for the rest of the design. To improve comfort and flow, we relocated the radiators to more practical positions and replaced the flooring with a finish that enhances warmth and grounding.
A key request from the client was to keep his much-loved sofa, so rather than replacing it, we reupholstered it in a tactile, high-quality fabric that complements the new palette. This not only preserved a sentimental piece but elevated it to suit the refreshed scheme. Texture played a vital role throughout, particularly in the bespoke window treatments designed specifically for the unusually shaped bay window. These soften the architectural lines and add depth without overwhelming the room.
The true moment of drama comes from the statement wallpaper on the ceiling. Inspired by 1930s glamour and chosen to anchor the entire concept, it draws the eye upward and has become the feature guests comment on the most. Its presence gives the room a cinematic quality, turning what was once an overlooked detail into the centrepiece of the design.
The completed music room now feels intentional, intimate, and full of character, an inviting space that reflects the client’s tastes and offers the perfect atmosphere for relaxation and enjoyment.
Bespoke joinery and a soft Roman blind elevate the bay window, blending colour, texture and quiet craftsmanship into one cohesive moment.
The reupholstered sofa and layered patterned cushions bring warmth and 1930s-inspired character, creating a comfortable focal point rich in personality.
“I asked Fed to come up with a bold, dramatic design and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. She understood what I needed and worked so creatively to deliver it.
She put me in touch with several excellent suppliers and tradespeople, and was a great help in negotiating with them.”
