This project for Ela’s Taverna in Handforth began at a pivotal moment, when much of the build was already underway and the restaurant needed a stronger, more cohesive design direction. The clients, a Greek family running the business with pride and passion, wanted their space to reflect their heritage, but in a modern, authentic way that avoided the predictable visual clichés often seen in Mediterranean restaurants. They needed a scheme that felt warm, characterful, and contemporary, while still honouring the story behind the food.
Our role was to reshape the vision and craft a design language that balanced identity with sophistication. We refreshed the palette entirely, introducing deeper, moodier shades of blue that anchor the space and create a sense of atmosphere. These tones sit comfortably alongside the warmth of natural timber and the brightness of bespoke lighting, giving the restaurant a relaxed yet elevated ambience.
A central part of the redesign was the bespoke bar area. We reimagined its structure and detailing to create a welcoming focal point, one that feels handcrafted, inviting, and aligned with the restaurant’s ethos. Its soft curves, vertical timber lines, and carefully layered lighting now set the tone for the entire dining experience.
To enhance comfort and visual flow, we specified new flooring and lighting throughout, along with bespoke seating options that support both practicality and style in a commercial setting. Table décor was curated to add colour and personality without overwhelming the space.
One of the standout elements is the Japan-inspired wallpaper, chosen for its ability to blend seamlessly with the blue palette while adding a bold, contemporary twist. It frames the dining area beautifully, offering a unique backdrop that guests notice immediately.
The completed design brings together heritage, craft, and modernity, transforming Ela’s Taverna into a warm, inviting, and visually distinctive restaurant that reflects the personality of the family behind it.

“Working with Federica was a fantastic experience. She has been incredibly helpful throughout the whole design process and her input has made such a difference to the atmosphere of our restaurant.”
This redesign brought identity, refinement, and cohesion to a family-run Greek restaurant that needed a stronger visual story.
Coming into the project late in the process, we developed a new scheme that honoured the clients’ heritage without relying on clichés or stereotypical motifs.
By introducing deeper blue hues, bespoke bar joinery, considered lighting, refined flooring, and curated table decor, the restaurant now feels warm, contemporary, and rooted in its cultural narrative.
